Akela 80:20

Akela is dog food done right.

I estimate the carbohydrates (or let’s say sugars) in the food to be an astoundingly low 23%. That makes it one of the lowest carbohydrate dry dog foods worldwide.

So what’s the catch?

Well, there really isn’t one…

The Original formula (for Working Dogs) boasts 80% meat ingredients (prior to cooking). A combination of chickenherringturkeychicken liversalmonchicken fatsalmon, plus salmon oil and chicken stock. Doesn’t that sound divine? It’s also exactly what we should be feeding our canine family members, whether they’re working dogs or old age lap dogs.  Dogs need meat proteins and fats for all their nutritional needs and to retain health.

All dry foods need some form of carbohydrates to bind the kibble, hence the 17% combo of potato and sweet potato. Sweet potato is the better of the two, but it’s a huge plus they’ve been kept to a minimum. Carbs in small amounts can offer a dog slow burning energy as well as vitamins and minerals, but should never be in excess.

Chicken liver is a fantastic inclusion and offers significant vitamins and minerals, sometimes as much as 100 times more than breast meats. The remaining ingredients, such as free range egg (3%) as a complete food source, are all well-considered inclusions. They’ve even accounted for joint health with the addition of glucosamine and chondroitin, not to mention salmon oil as an excellent source of omega fats for heart health, wellbeing, skin, and coat. I won’t list the long remaining list of ingredients, but each one has nutritional merit for a dog to retain excellent health.

If you’re still reading and haven’t been convinced how good this food is, then the ingredients are also human grade. It’s a solid 5 star dog food.
